چکیده

The paper presents a numerical technique for modeling “trace” impurity transport in the scrape-off-layer (SOL) and core regions by implicit coupling of a three-dimensional (3D) edge Monte Carlo code like EMC3-Eirene [1, 2] to a one-dimensional (1D) core model handled by a finite difference method. For given core plasma and transport coefficient profiles, certain types of particular solutions to the 1D model are pre-calculated under specific boundary conditions at the SOL-core interface. Linear combination of these solutions yields a general solution, which is then translated into “Monte Carlo language” by formulating a socalled “charge state transformation probability” matrix. This matrix provides definitive boundary conditions at the SOL-core interface so that a self-consistent solution for both SOL and core is achievable without the need for SOL-core iteration.

Impurity enrichment and radiative enhancement using induced SOL ̄ow in DIII-D

Experiments on DIII-D have demonstrated the ecacy of using induced scrape-o€-layer (SOL) ̄ow to preferentially enrich impurities in the divertor plasma. This SOL ̄ow is produced through simultaneous deuterium gas injection at the midplane and divertor exhaust. Using this SOL ̄ow, an improvement in enrichment (de®ned as the ratio of impurity fraction in the divertor to that in the plasma core) ...

Multi-energy soft-x-ray technique for impurity transport measurements in the fusion plasma edge

A new diagnostic technique was developed to produce high-resolution impurity transport measurements of the steep-gradient edge of fusion plasmas. Perturbative impurity transport measurements were performed for the first time in the NSTX plasma edge (r/a ∼ 0.6 to the SOL) with short neon gas puffs, and the resulting line and continuum emission was measured with the new edge multi-energy soft-x-r...

On Impurity Handling in High Performance Stellarator/Heliotron Plasmas

The Large Helical Device (LHD) and Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X, under construction) are experiments specially designed to demonstrate long pulse (quasi steady-state) operation, which is an intrinsic property of Stellarators and Heliotrons. Significant progress was made in establishment of high performance plasmas. A crucial point is the increasing impurity confinement towards high density as observed...

Study of Recycling Impurity Retention in Alcator C

This work was aimed at reproducing experimental results in impurity compression of Ar, as well as the screening of recycling and non-recycling impurities from reaching the core plasma. As part of the study the code was upgraded in order to track the impurity flow from source till it reaches the core, include the energy dependence on recycled impurity atoms, and allow for more realistic impurity...
